When I first began investing in SEO, I wasn’t entirely sure how to tell if it was working. Rankings moved around, traffic fluctuated, and leads trickled in—but I wanted something concrete. It wasn’t until I started using a structured approach to track performance that I truly understood the return on my SEO campaigns.

Define Clear SEO Goals From the Start

You can’t measure what you haven’t defined. I learned early on that setting vague goals like “rank higher on Google” won’t help you track meaningful progress.

Instead, set goals like:

  • Increase organic traffic by 30% over 6 months

  • Rank in the top 3 for five local search terms

  • Generate 10 new leads per month from organic traffic

With clear targets, you’ll know exactly what to monitor—and whether your strategy is working.

Track Organic Traffic (But Segment It)

Organic traffic is often the first metric people check—and for good reason. If SEO is improving, your traffic from search engines should steadily grow.

Tools like Google Analytics let you:

  • Filter traffic by source (look specifically at “Organic Search”)

  • Segment by region to monitor NZ-specific growth

  • View trends over time to spot seasonal or campaign-driven spikes

Don’t just look at the numbers—look at the patterns. Is traffic growing steadily? Are new users engaging or bouncing?

Monitor Keyword Rankings Strategically

Ranking reports can be addictive—but not all keyword movement is meaningful. I used to obsess over small daily shifts, but now I focus on the keywords that actually drive results.

Here’s what matters:

  • Are you ranking for high-intent terms relevant to your products or services?

  • Are your local rankings (e.g. “plumber Auckland”) improving consistently?

  • Are your rankings moving from pages 2–3 to page 1? That’s where the real visibility happens.

Use a tool that tracks ranking history so you can see progress over time—not just snapshots.

Measure Engagement and On-Site Behaviour

Getting people to your site is one thing. Keeping them there—and guiding them toward a goal—is another.

Pay attention to:

  • Bounce rate: Are visitors leaving after viewing one page?

  • Pages per session: Are people exploring more than just the homepage?

  • Average session duration: Are they reading your content or clicking through?

  • Conversion rate: Are visits leading to enquiries, downloads, or sales?

Strong SEO NZ campaigns don’t just drive clicks—they drive meaningful interaction.

Track Conversions, Not Just Traffic

Traffic is great. But if no one’s buying, calling, or filling out your forms, you’re not seeing ROI.

Use conversion tracking to measure:

  • Purchases or bookings made after an organic visit
