Diesel fuel is commonly used in oil and gas extracting equipment, although some locales use electric or natural gas powered equipment. Diesel fuel is similar to heating oil, which is used in central heating. In Europe, the United States, and Canada, taxes on diesel fuel are higher than on heating oil due to the dongfeng mobile fuel dispenser truck tax, and in those areas, heating oil is marked with mobile fuel dispenser truck dyes and trace chemicals to prevent and detect tax fraud. This fuel may have sulfur levels that exceed the limits for road use in some countries (e.g. US). In Australia, gasoline is unleaded, and available in 91, 95, 98 and 100 octane (names differ from brand to brand).

These are usually "express" versions with limited seating and limited menus, though some may be regular-sized and have spacious seating. Larger restaurants are common at truck stops and toll road service plazas. In some regions of America and Australia, many filling stations have a mechanic on duty, but this practice has died out in other parts of the world. In the United Kingdom, the three largest are BP, Esso and Shell; the "Big Four" supermarket chains, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco, also operate filling stations, as well as some smaller supermarket chains such as The Co-operative Group and Waitrose.

Its small-scale portable refueller – The Gateway – has seen service for many years. Safety or driver assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Foreign brands such as BP (joint venture with Reliance Industries, branded as Jio-bp) and Shell are also present. The loader cannot leave the truck during the loading process and must watch the top of the tanker to ensure there are no escaping vapor fumes. It is critical that the loading process stop if the operator sees any fumes. These escaping fumes are extremely flammable and also represent lost fuel. The operator must also keep an eye out for leaking gasoline from the hoses or from the tanker itself.
